Ambiguïté (1973-Musique concrète) Columbia Princeton Electronic Music Centre

3 stereo recordings and two rooms – 11 mins.

This is one of two pieces made at the invitation of Michel Jaffrennou, a visual artist (later video and then new media artist) with whom I would work closely for over 1-1/2 decades. He requested this for an exhibition at the Galérie Stadler in Paris in which the theme was ‘ambiguity’.

The piece involves dictionary definitions in a few languages read by two speakers as an introduction. Then all three recordings play across two spaces to create a not quite synchronised collage using only the texts from the introduction as sound material.

The two recordings that follow are the introduction and a mix of the three stereo recordings. The voices are from the composer and Pamela Jarvis.
