…tumque requievit (1974)

6 percussionists/more than 100 instruments, 25 min.

This large-scale percussion work (too large scale, in fact) has this Biblical text as its title as ‘and then he rested’ is the sentiment one might have after the barrage of surrealism this work contains including the use of electric toothbrushes and a pneumatic drill.

The piece is dedicated to Peter Frank, a close friend in New York City during my years of early study. When John Cage looked at the score, he didn’t raise his eyebrows about its content but instead said that a typewritten score isn’t as beautiful as his calligraphed ones.

The best way to discover it is to dive into its score.
