Expansions (1974)

This work was my master’s thesis in composition and was inspired by Peter Schat’s Thema which, in turn, was influenced by a Frederic Rzewski work, both involving expansion of material. In this case, unlike both of them, I wanted to do something I’d experienced in Milton Babbitt’s All Set, namely, to merge jazz with post-twelve tone composition. This was done in a much more user friendly manner despite the rows with two contrasting groups of musicians with contrasting material as a sort of call and response structure.
