Mexican piece for the radio series (7), commissioned by CMMAS+ENES/UNAM for the Visiones Sonoras festival, 8-channel work, 13’20”.
Programme note: This is the 7th piece in the Radio Series, which, like most of my works, focuses on recycling sounds. They all use diverse radio broadcast recordings from a single nation covering a short span of time as source material. In this case recordings were used from both national and regional Mexican broadcasters spanning a very wide range of programmes. Sounds are exclusively presented in their original state. My role is simply to choose and re-compose material from the dozens of hours of broadcasts. One can focus on the content at any given moment or move on to listen to the sonic development choreographed in space, what I call ‘sound theatre’. The piece seeks to take the known, tilt it ever so slightly, and re-present it as a sound-based artwork. It is what I call a theatre of sound within a choreography of space in which humour, and darker matters, are remixed.
It is a commission of CMMAS, the Mexican Centre for Music and Sonic Arts is dedicated to Rodrigo Sigal, Silvia de la Cueva and Tonalli Rufino Nakamura. I would also like to thank Mario Cruz for making the broadcast recordings, creating the translations and the video with English translation. The video version below is binaural.
I have published a chapter about it in 2022 (see below).
As far as copyright is concerned … don’t ask.
