Wolken Wind Schermen (Clouds Wind Screens 1976)

Duet for solo oboe or flute, live electronics and tapes – indeterminate duration

Wolken, Wind, Schermen - cover

Cover or Wolken Wind Schermen – een Schilderij (a painting) score by Michel Jaffrennou

This text and graphic score ‘do it yourself’ composition was created upon the request of the virtuoso oboist, Nora Post. Later, a flute version would be made played originally by Robert Dick and Jos Zwaanenburg who recorded it on the CD La Zététique, (Erasmus WVH083). Duet refers to the performer playing live and recorded simultaneously.

Wolken/clouds refer to the soloist taking a trip around the world. A map is included in the score to identify stopping-off places. Ideally traditional forms of music are to be play to demonstrate cultural diversity and how precious these forms of music are.

Wind refers to more local sounds, local ideally meaning near a given performance.

Screens refers to a contrasting element of extended techniques, something that developed heavily around this time in both oboe and flute repertoire.

In Jos Zwaanenburg’s case there is a combination of his live performance, performance involving live electronics, one stereo tape of environmental sounds and another almost entirely of flute sounds. A technician has a performance score to launch and mix all elements.

Evelyn Jamieson choreographed the piece in 1994 which is the video that follows with Zwaanenburg on flute.

The score appears underneath the performance of this work.
