Five Introspections (1972)

5 min. – flute, published by Ascolta Music (Holland), 5 min.

This is an early student work in which I was trying to find a voice. The aesthetic at Columbia University was one of atonality and clearly Béla Bartók’s music was a sound that inspired me.

This short piece is in five movements: Expression, Debate, Decision, Fanfare/loss, Dance.

It was recorded on the CD La Zététique (Erasmus WVH083) and performed by Jos Zwaanenberg.

The CD recordings of the five sections and the score follow below.

I. Expression

II. Debate

III. Decision

IV. Fanfare/loss

V. Dance
